Spring Term

Year 5 worked on their longitudinal study in Science this half term. Our question was "Can we grow plants from anything other than seeds?"

We used a variety of plant parts, like leaves, stems and roots. We used the tops of carrorts, radishes, swede and celery. We also planted baby shoots from a spider plant. We found out that it is possible to grow new plants, even when you don't have seeds.

Year 5 took on an artist study linked to our Circle of Life topic. The Bauer Brothers were botanist artists, meaning they painted realistic pictures of plants. Their work can be found in science books. We investigated their style and then created some pictures of our own.

Skateboarding - Autumn Term

We all took part in a skateboarding workshop. Firstly we learnt the skills of balancing and manoeuvring the board, then we moved onto learning some tricks. The 'Pancake' involved us learning how to flip the board and land on it with both feet.

Science - Cam Toys - Autumn Term

In pairs we designed and made a mechanical toy, using cams to control the movement. It was important for us to think about how we wanted the toy to move so we could choose the correct cam for the desired movement.

When we had completed our cam toys, we took them to Year 3 to share with the children. We talked to the children about what they liked about our toys and used this to inform part of our evaluations.

Winchester Science Museum - Autumn Term

Our trip to Winchester Science Centre was a fantastic way to explore the theme of Space.

We took part in a workshop where we investigated the properties of non-Newtonian fluids - we learnt that these are fluids that can take multiple states.

The highlight of the trip was the Planetarium, where we learnt about different constellations and our position in our Solar System.

Wave Sculptures - Autumn Term

We had a great time creating 3D wave sculptures, which highlighted the problem our oceans face from plastic waste.

We used twisted wire covered in tights tomake the structure form and painted it in a mixture of whilte paint and glue to make a primed surface ready to paint. We carefully mixed blue tints and shades to represent the ocean wave.

We pactised mixing colours in our art books and looked for inspiration from other 'wave' works of art.
