Anti-Bullying

Behaviour and Bullying

We use a clear and consistent approach towards behaviour management across the whole school. The emphasis is always on positive feedback, but the children know that there are clear sanctions for any unwanted behaviour. We use a numbered scale to demonstrate the ‘level’ (seriousness) of unwanted behaviour and the consequence that will result. Unwanted behaviour during class time results in the loss of some Golden Time and parents are informed of this. Unwanted behaviour during break times will result in the loss of some or all of a break time or break times. Parents are informed if a whole break time is lost, and in the case of persistent low level repeated problems or a serious incident.


We use a variety of strategies to help children learn to modify their unwanted behaviour which may include: spending time with the school Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA); spending some time in the school nurture facility; or modified behaviour strategies to be used in class. Parents who have concerns about their child’s behaviour at school or at home may access help and advice from the school’s Parent Support Assistant.


Bullying is an issue which is taken very seriously at Wallisdean Junior School. All allegations of bullying are investigated and proactive steps are taken to repair relationships and prevent any future incidents. Our on-going programme of PSHE work in class; through the school ELSA; and the whole school ethos aims to help children develop the skills they need to avoid becoming either a victim or a bully and reported incidents of bullying at Wallisdean Junior School are, thankfully, rare.


Expectations of Pupil Behaviour

At our school we firmly believe that:

  • Your child has the right to attend a school in which learning takes place without disruption from other pupils.

  • Our teachers have a right to teach.


We therefore expect everyone (including adults) to adhere to our code of conduct, which is based around Rights and Responsibilities.


At all times we should

  • Be honest

  • Always try your best

  • Speak politely and be kind to others

  • Listen to other people

  • Follow instructions straight away

  • Look after property


Each class creates their own class charter based on rights and responsibilities.


We believe that praise, positive actions and rewards best promote good behaviour. The school runs a system of rewards and sanctions for pupils. We operate a House system and the children are divided into one of 4 houses – Pioneer, Voyager, Discoverer or Venturer. Children earn house points for good behaviour and the winning team each term take part in a special reward event.


Rewards for good behaviour include

  • Praise

  • Stickers

  • House Points

  • Star of the Week

  • Golden Time

  • Certificates of Achievement


Sanctions for unacceptable behaviour include

  • Verbal warnings Loss of all/part of lunchtime

  • Loss of part of golden time Short isolation in class

  • Isolation in another class

  • Isolation from the class to be supervised by a senior school leader

  • Letter or phone call home to parents

  • In very serious cases, the school may use exclusions
